"Iron Chancellor," who defeated Austria and Denmark. By 1871, Germany was united under Prussian power in me Franco-Prussian War. In 1919, Prussia became a state of the new Weimar Republic, only to be incorporated into me German Democratic Republic in 1952, after giving its lands east of the Oder river to Poland Throughout me centuries, many people migrated to other parts of Germany, as well as to North America This flow of migration to the New World began around 1650, and continued well into the 20th century. Pockets of German settlements include Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois. California, and Ohio. In Canada, German settlements centered around Ontario and the Prairies. Settlers bearing the family name Booiman include Eleanor Burman, who settled in Massachusetts in 1728; Johannes Burman who arrived in Philadelphia m 1767 and Rachel Burman and Mary Burman both of whom also arrived in that city in 1773; Henry Beurman,who came to Philadelphia, Pa., in 1823; Hermann C. Buermann who was recorded as having arrived in St. Clair County, M. in 1859; Johann Burmann, aged 56, and Marie Burmann, aged 57, who settled in South Dakota. in 1889. In our modern period, many members of the surname Booiman achieved prominence, such as: Sir (John) Charles Burman.
